I have always suffered from Heartburn/ Acid Reflux. For as long as I can remember. As an Holistic Therapist and Astrologer, here in Dublin, knowing I am a Virgo Sun (learn more about your own astrology here) now makes more sense to me.

I am obsessed with Herbal Medicine. I love Astrology and I adore when they come together. Finding natural Home Remedies to replace pharmaceuticals, is a passion of mine. Now I love to combine my personal curiosity and wisdom with helping my clients to understand themselves more too.

Virgo rules day to day routine and health, as well as the digestive and nervous system. It is prone to worry, anxiety, stress and perfectionism! It’s easy to see how the need for simple natural remedies to reduce heartburn are a must!

TOP TIPS: Astrologically, there’s lot of factors that can indicate stress, anxiety or nervous tension. It can be as a result of a passing Astrological Transit, a Natal placement in your Birth chart, planetary aspects or to do with house or signs placements.

I am not a medical Astrologer but know if you are a Virgo or Gemini (ruled by Mercury) Sun, Moon or Rising its likely you will resonate with much of this blog. You may experience digestive issues and this is often caused by stress as a factor.

My recommendation is to Journal on what parts of life are you experiencing stress or overwhelm in. Ask yourself what in my life am I finding hard to digest? Finding it hard to process? Finding it challenging to stomach?

A little confession…

In my good ol’ clubbing days I was known by some as ‘The Cat Woman’. This wasn’t due to any sexy superhero outfit or affinity for carrying cats in my handbag! It was because I was known for my tall order of a Pint of Milk by the end of a night out! This was a vague attempt to soothe the heartburn, which I was usually nursing after a lot of drinking! It never really worked very well.

There are several causes for Heartburn, indigestion, acid re-flux and stomach discomfort. Some of these are stress, anxiety and a strained nervous system. Bad eating habits, unhealthy routines, and eating late at night can be a problem also. As well as having an unbalanced PH system and low HCL (fancy word for stomach acid). Obviously there are some more serious issues that can be the cause, so obviously see a Doctor if you are in any way concerned.

As an Holistic Therapist much of the work I do is to show clients how to interpret their world.

What the heck does that mean Debs, I hear you say?!

Well, when we experience dis-ease or dis-harmony in our body it is usually a signpost. These sign posts are usually trying to show us something. That ‘Something’ we usually ignore until it becomes louder and more problematic. Something we put on the long finger till the issue is really in our face. It is only then we seek out additional support and help.

Clients come to me when they are stressed, can’t sleep, suffering anxiety, insomnia, body aches and pains, headaches and migraines etc. I’ve noticed Digestive issues can often go hand in hand. Heartburn is usually a sign that we need to pay more attention to our stress levels, our eating habits and lifestyle routines.

Thankfully there are lots of simple natural remedies! These will give you instant relief (or near enough!) when you are suffering!

So, what are some of these instant Natural Heartburn remedies?

Firstly, let’s get the boring (yet seemingly still necessary) small print stuff out of the way….

I am not a trained or medical Doctor or Health Consultant. What I am offering you here are my words of wisdom! It goes without saying, in this day and age, as a responsible adult if you have any medical or underlying health conditions seek the advice of a Doctor. If you are on any medication, are breastfeeding or pregnant, or are in any way unsure of whether you need to see or speak to a Doctor before trying any of the below nuggets of wisdom… Go do that… Now the formalities are over…..

Now, Here’s the good stuff….

Here are some amazing simple and effective Herbal Medicine, Folk Medicine, Home Remedies for you to apply at home….

  • Baking Soda in cold water, take a quarter tsp and drink
    • If you burp before 3mins your HCL is likely to be normal, if after 3mins it’s likely to be low. This will neutralize your HCL
  • Apple Cider Vinegar,  take a TSP of in warm water 30mins before meals
    • This can also make it worse, so you need to try and see
  • Peppermint Oil,  take a few drops in water and drink
    • Please read the label to ensure it is an oil that’s specifically for ingesting!
  • Kim-chi or Fermented Pro-biotic Food
    • My favorite go to, after Baking Soda! Kills sugar cravings and is great for tummy upsets
  • Fresh Ginger, chew on some raw
    • Naturally aids upset tummies
  • Digestive Bitters
    • Helps you break down your food by aiding the Liver, best before food
  • Avoid trigger Foods such as alcohol, chocolate, sweets, processed and refined food

What are some of the longer term Natural Heartburn remedies?

  • Create Daily Routine
    • When we have routine, our nervous system is less stressed out. Therefore when it’s more balanced it has direct effect on digestive system.
  • Portion Control
    • Eating too much and not knowing when to stop (I have this issue) causes us to overfill our stomach. Which in turn slows digestion… Think of filling your washing machine too full… less likely to have clean clothes and more likely to flood it and have it break down!
  • Eliminate eating after 6pm
    • After this time our digestive system begins to slow down. It begins to hibernate for the evening, which allows the rest of our organs time to re-couperate and replenish.
  • Re-balance your PH
    • Too much junk, sugar and carbs can cause our system to over acidify. When this happens, the good bacteria cannot thrive, the bad bacteria take over and we have less digestive fire. Our immune systems can then lower, which may encourage growth of parasites and create a lovely environment for all the baddies to come hang out! Re-balaning your PH with healthy foods, pro-biotics, reducing bad foods and getting proper rest and routine are a huge help. You can also get alkaline teas in most health-food shops, which help also.   • Meditation

  • Mental Health
    • Our brain and gut are connected. When our gut feels bad, often our mood is off, fiery and out of sync.
    • The opposite is also true, when we are in a bad mood and stressed out for long periods of time it can affect our gut health.
    • Therefore we experience heart burn, acid reflux, digestion issues etc.
