How to Make Your Own ‘Vick’s Vapor Rub’ Alternative, in 3 Easy steps!

This Smells AMAZING!!! You will LOVE this easy to make, 100% Natural Vicks Vapo Rub alternative!!

Kids of the 80’s and 90’s do you remember (when you were sick) that little Blue and Green tub of smelly menthol goop, that was slathered all over your chest, neck, throat, and head (wherever you could stand it!) as a kid?

Yup! Vicks Vapo Rub! I used to both love and hate seeing that tub appear, all in one go…. yet I can’t deny it was magic at soothing a cold or flu! It was a saving grace in our house as a kid!

Would you like to know how to make your own, 100% natural , alternative at home? It’s so so simple!

If you’re an impatient Aries Moon, just like me, and want to skip the waffle and jump to the recipe….. head on down to the bottom of the page! Enjoy! If you have a lot of Mercurial or Air energy, then you will want to know the ‘Whys’, so read on!

So, why bother making your own alternative when you can buy it in the shop?

Simply put…. Most of these types of products are made with Petroleum … which isn’t so good for you!!!

Whatever you put ON your body is absorbed in and through your body. Therefore, if you are constantly using a product that is not natural or easily processed and broken down by the body, and therefore eliminated through your excretory system (Think Poop, Pee, Sweat) then it gets trapped in your body, wreaks all manner of havoc and its harmful!

Many Shop based products, like our beloved Vicks Vapo Rub, are often made on a base of Petroleum… you know… like what you run your car with? Yup!!! That’s what I said!

Yes, of course it’s ‘cleaned’ down and made more acceptable for use in cosmetic products, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for you, or even safe over long term usage!! What we get in these shop bought items are usually a by-product of the petrol industry, which therefore makes it a great cheap base to bulk up these products with…. because lets face it, using more expensive bases would mean a higher cost to the customer and perhaps less sales!

Petroleum is used in everything from your hand, body and face creams, to your lip balm (think of vaseline type products) and the best way to know, is to simply check the label.

If you’re not convinced, then here’s a few small reasons you should consider skipping petroleum based products;

  • It creates a waterproof barrier but that also stops the skin from breathing
  • It seals the skin, trapping dirt and grease, and therefore likely to cause spots and infections
  • May negatively affect Estrogen levels in the body, create mood swings, PMS, fibrocystic breast changes etc
  • May negatively effect the endocrine system, which regulates all bodily processes including hormones
  • May contain carcinogenic (cancer causing) substances and be poisonous when ingested through nose or lungs
  • May cause Lipid Pnemonia, caused by inhaling the petroluem product over long period of time
  • Body cannot process petroleum so it gets stored in the body instead of excreted

But hey, I’m not a scientist or a Doctor, so go online and do your own research. Take back your power by informing yourself and becoming more conscious of what’s being put in your product, and what YOU are putting in your body!

Now… less of that serious stuff and on to the fun!!!

Here’s all you need to make this AMAZING alternative to soothe your soul (and nose!) is…

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup of Coconut Oil
  • 4 Tblsp Beeswax Pellets
  • 40 Drops of Camphor or Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • 40 Drops of Peppermint Oil
  • 20 Drop of Clove Oil
  • 20 Drops of Cinnamon Bark Oil
  • 20 Drop of Ginger Oil
  • 10 Drop of Rosemary Oil

1. Melt the Coconut oil and Beeswax pellets in a ban-marie (a hot water bath i.e. glass bowl over saucepan of hot water) – be careful not to boil. You only want to heat and melt.

2. When the mixture is melted and clear remove from the heat and add in your essential oils. Don’t add them when the mixture is too hot as they will evaporate and lose their potency.

3. Pour into a steralised container and allow to set, place your lid on and voila – your own soothing menthol rub for cold and flu season!

PLEASE NOTE: Not to be used on babies, children, or pregnant or expectant mothers, or if breastfeeding. Please note that the above are essential oils. Essential Oils are not to be ingested (eaten or taken inside the body) as they are potent in strength. There are certain essential oil brands that are made to be taken internally, but most are not. Therefore, the above method is only to be used externally as a rub. It is also important, as with applying any new products to your body, that you do a patch test to ensure you are not allergic to any ingredient, topically or otherwise. If you ae unsure or have any doubt, please consult your Doctor, Physician, Naturopath, Herbalist or healthcare Practitioner. For those of you who, like me, LOVE natural healing…

Here are some qualities of these incredible plants and oils you are using…..

Peppermint soothes, relieves, and opens the airways. It is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, alleviates coughs and cools the mind and mental irritation.

Camphor is cooling and soothing, it is a decongestant which relieves coughs, blocked noses and airways, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, sedative, and boosts circulation especially when rubbed onto affected areas

Clove is ant-viral, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and analgesic. Those who have ever chewed on a clove for toothaches will know it numbs the area it touhes

Cinnamon anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-fungal, increased circulation and well…. it smells damn good too! (did you know that taking cinnamon internally, may lower blood sugar!!!)

Ginger is a natural anti-septic, anti-inflammatory,and  stimulant for circulation so it will heat up the area it touches and help bring healing to the area

Rosemary is a natural anti-inflammatory stimulant and is also a preservative, in that it has anti-fungal qualities, and so helps to keep your mixture from going off so quickly

SO….

I’d love to know…..Tell me…

Would you be willing to make the switch and make your own?

Have you made you own version of this before?

Did you try the above method and how did it go?

Drop me your comments below, hit me up on Social Media, drop me an email and let me know… I’d love to hear from you 🙂
